Hottest Spring Accessories Trends in 2017

Spring is the time when everything changes: temperatures get higher, everything turns green, and we feel like we’re waking up from hibernation. It’s also the time when we start experimenting with clothes more, due to being tired of having to wear heavy clothes all winter long. Still, spring can also be tricky and go from pleasantly warm to pretty chilly in a day, so it’s good to layer your clothes. All this opens up new possibilities of combining different materials and prints, and these should be accompanied by great accessories.

Corset belt

In the months that follow, your figure will be drawing attention with lovely corset belts. Not only are they elegant and feminine, but they are also a handy and incredibly effective when it comes to waist-slimming. Fashion designers have recently rediscovered this wonderful item and before you know it, ladies have started wearing these statement belts all the time. You can wear corset belts as casual pieces over boiler suits, or you can channel your inner Goth queen and go for the tight leather ones.

Eye-catching earrings

The rule of the season seems to be that your earrings should be sisters, but not twins. Similar yet mismatched earrings have taken the runways: Marni, Mulberry, and Ellie Saab, among others, have embraced the trend of mismatched earrings. While it’s okay to experiment if you wouldn’t like to wear a completely different pair, pick the ones that are similar in some way: made of same material, have the same color, or identical decorations. This way you will draw attention but not look too strange.

Choker necklaces still rule

Just when it seemed that chokers are slowly disappearing, they came back in full swing – glitter, faux gold chains, elastic lace, and rhinestones everywhere you look! It looks like the ‘90s are coming back, at least when it comes to jewelry. Chokers are seductive, mysterious, and they are able to transform any outfit in the blink of an eye. Pick a thin, fragile one if you don’t want to look too ‘wild’ at work, or go for a suggestive leather one when you go out. What is more, you can use lovely materials such as velvet, rhinestones, feathers, and pearls to make your own chokers in the comfort of your home.

Tassels everywhere

When you long for past times and daydream about running away with a group of gypsies and traveling the world, tassels are there to bring that boho vibe to you. Flitter-flutter tassels remind us of hippies and gypsies, and they add a girly yet exotic touch to any outfit. You can wear them with anything: swimsuits, light linen kimonos, earrings, and you can even add tassel pendants to your favorite designer shoulder bags. Be playful and experiment with different colors – spice up your outfit with splashes of royal blue, blood-red, and daffodil-yellow tassels.

Gloves are still on

What comes as a surprise this season is the presence of gloves. We are used to wearing them in winter and seeing them in old movies when ladies go to the opera, but this time it’s different. Gloves we’re about to see this season are made of light materials such as lace, and they have more cutouts and transparency than ever before. Don’t be afraid to wear ruffles, black leather, or long, embellished opera-length ones.

It’s easy to forget how important good accessories are, especially when we focus so much on our clothes alone. If you want to look flawless every time, you should always have a great accessory or two to draw everyone’s attention. Right accessories are the things that can turn a boring or ordinary outfit into an elegant and stylish one in an instant, so make sure to choose them carefully.

Spring College Beauty and Fashion Guide

Have you noticed that the days are getting warmer and warmer? Yes, the flowers are blooming, the grass is greener, and even the sky seems a tad bluer. It is finally time to take off your winter coat and leave it stashed somewhere until the end of the year. Spring is here, and it brings an array of new trends and the need to shake up your wardrobe a bit. Spring is, by far, the most inspirational season when it comes to fashion. It allows you to experiment with colors and patterns and to layer several different pieces of clothes. Here are some fashion tips for this season that all fraternity boys and sorority girls should know.

Go Green(ery)

Pantone’s color of the year has quickly found its way into the fashion world as a bold statement. Since it symbolizes nature, optimism, and renewal, it is the best shade to be wearing this spring.

Girls: Depending on whether you are a scaredy-cat or a green queen in terms of style, you should wear this shade in accents or go all the way. For subtle flashes of greenery, opt for neutral clothing combinations paired up with green jewelry, handbag, wrist watch or shoes. For more out-there outfits, wear an all-green long sleeved t-shirt with jeans, flared jersey skirt with black, brown or other neutral shade tees.

Boys: Don’t let this bright shade intimidate you, boys. You can easily incorporate it into your spring style by wearing a trendy patch bomber on top of a casual outfit or eye-catching green pants. If you want a more subtle touch, wear green-framed wayfarers or trainers.

When it comes to skincare, although we all tend to spend more and more time outside, it is crucial not to forget to protect ourselves from the damaging UV radiation by using quality sun protection cream.

Make a Statement

Fashion is more than clothes; it is a means of communication. With this idea, fashion designers have taken printed messages on t-shirts to a more serious level with political statements and important sayings. Now, you can wear your attitude wherever you go.

Girls: One of the most notable pieces on spring fashion shows was Dior’s t-shirt with the sign “We should all be feminists”. What a must-have for a college girl’s wardrobe, right? Wear this, or any other t-shirt with a message that makes you feel comfortable, together with jeans and sneakers or long flared skirt. To make a completely striking look, put sam bold matte lipstick on.

Boys: Don’t think that boys have nothing to say on this matter. We could see Comme des Garçons Plus’s “The King is Naked” tee, MSGM “What do you feel?” question and many other. When paired with denim or plaid pants, tees like these are winners.

Although sunny, springs can be windy, so do not forget to put some lip balm for protection.

Smart Casual

College style is basically freestyle. It is a time when you’re still searching for yourself, so you can go with whatever feels good. However, there will be some occasions (special classes, guest lecturers, faculty events, etc.) when you will have to add just a bit more elegance to your casual college style.

Girls: A lightweight blouse, pair of jeans and stiletto heels are just as appropriate for a class as they are for a meeting with the dean. Top it with a classic blazer, and you’re good to go. On the other hand, you can always go with long sleeved dresses and heels or ankle boots. After you’re done with the more formal occasion, put a leather jacket over your combination, put your mascara on and you can go to a college party.

Boys: Jeans, t-shirt and a sports blazer are the staples of casual menswear. If you want to take it to the next level, you can pair up corduroy pants, button-down shirt and chinos. If you are into beards, that are eternal beauty statement, do not skip to give it adequate grooming treatment.

To the Beach Everyone!

One more reason why we love spring so much is because it’s so close to summer. And you know what summer means, don’t you? Hitting the beach with your best friends of course. Summon this season the best way you can – with fashion.

Girls: One of the biggest hits of the season comes straight out of beach umbrellas, Nantucket awnings, and lounge chairs: seaside stripes. How to wear them? Pants, shirts, skirts, shorts, dresses, t-shirts… there is really no end to this.

Boys: On the boys’ side, we have the return of marine accents, such as embroidered anchors, and navy blue and red accents. Beach means an urge to have a good looking and healthy body, so it is a perfect timing to start visiting your gym. Intensive workout means that you have to work on a healthy diet. Besides healthy foods, you can find some quality supplements online, just to make sure that your body is getting everything it needs. That way you can be sure that you will meet the summer full of self-esteem.

Follow these few tips, but don’t forget to add something of your own to your outfits. Remember what we said – college style is freestyle.

Aussie Fashion and Greenery

Just when we thought that Pantone can’t surprise us anymore, they’ve managed to do just that. In the previous years, we had something a bit easier to work with: Marsala and pastels have always been easy to combine and add to our outfits. Greenery, on the other hand, is as beautiful as it is difficult to wear. This wonderful color is the perfect embodiment of nature, health, and the new beginning that every spring brings. This year, it’s all about Greenery, and while the rest of the world may struggle to incorporate it into their looks, Aussies are overjoyed. They are well known for their love for bright colors, so it’s their time to shine.

Greenery in the streets

Untitled design (61)

Aussie girls love wearing clothes inspired by nature: floral prints, bright colors and flowy materials can be seen everywhere you look, and they love experimenting too. Australian designers can do anything — the girls in the streets are dressed in comfortable clothes, but with luxurious accessories and feminine pieces. Green miniskirts with ankle boots and button down polka dot shirts; skinny jeans with moss green cashmere sweaters — or even bright green coats under which you can spot one-shoulder printed blouses paired perfectly with cropped pants, waist wonderfully accentuated with a leather belt are just some of the outfits you might see.

Wear it to work or college

Untitled design (62)

‘When in doubt, wear black’ is the unwritten rule of the fashion industry, probably as old as time, but sometimes you just have to step out of your comfort zone and experiment a bit, Aussie style. Yes, black pencil skirt and stilettos will make you look great, but instead of wearing a plain white shirt, why not wear a bright green one? It will still be elegant and sophisticated, but it will also make you look fresh and youthful. Slim, cropped pants in bright green will not stick out too much if you pair them with something neutral like gray, beige, and white. Also, a green dress will not be over-the-top if you wear black pumps and put on a black jacket.

Wild nights out

Untitled design (64)

Is there a better way to stand out in a crowd than to wear something bright and bold? Off-shoulder bandeau crop tops pair perfectly with high-waist pencil skirts and pumps, and if one of those is bright green, there is just no chance you’ll stay unnoticed even in a crowded club. Playsuits are also popular, so by wearing it and lifting your hair in a high bun, you can get that edgy yet corporate look. A light, flowy dress combined with a clutch bag and cute flats will make you look like a delicate, feminine girl who just stepped out of a fairy tale.

The devil is in the details

Untitled design (65)

Even though Australians love to keep things casual, they still know where to draw the line. For those who are still reluctant to wear all-green, there is a way to incorporate this popular color into your everyday fashion easily. Discreet details are as important for the overall outfit as big pieces like pants, or shoes. A lovely pair of earrings, a nice bag, silk shawl, or a brooch that matches your nail polish or eyeshadow will make you look great and point out just how much you pay attention to details. Sometimes it’s enough to wear a statement necklace, or a cocktail ring to completely transform your look from ordinary to luxurious.

Australia has always been special: exotic, unusual, and even a bit dangerous, but Aussies are known worldwide for their laid-back attitudes. It doesn’t come as a surprise that they have always been known for their extravagant style which was different from strict styles of New York, Paris, and Milan. It looks like the world will be looking at Aussies for a bit of inspiration when it comes to fashion, and the Land Down Under sure has a lot to offer.

College Fashion Inspiration: Brisbane Street Style

On the right side of Australia, 732km north of Sydney, you will find beautiful Brisbane: The city of young (even though it is one of the oldest cities in Australia). Brisbane has a rich urban culture, with many college students and so much positive energy. Now, when we are talking about Brisbane students, even though they live by that “laid back” Aussie style, they’re always willing to experiment with different looks. Here are some street style characteristics.

Laid back style

Girls Untitled design (49)

They make zero effort and somehow manage to look chic. On every corner, you will see a cute girl in her sneakers, leggings and an oversized shirt; or the other type with leggings, oversized T-shirt, loose hair and a long-knit cardigan. Makeup is their enemy because they’re naturally beautiful.

Guys Untitled design (50)

Here it is all about messy hair, white T-shirt and shorts (usually khaki with many big pockets). I find this really attractive to be honest!

Different circumstances always tend to dictate our style, and our dear Brisbane students don’t care too much about it. They are definitely not afraid to go edgy.

Flannel shirts

Untitled design (51) source/source/source/source/source

Simple, comfortable and warm – these can be found in every thrift shop in the world. They are often worn by our dear Brisbane students and they are wearing them in so many different ways. You can wear your flannel shirt as an accessory around your waist, you can put it on, button it up and tuck it in your jeans, and let’s not forget about the most iconic combination of white or black tank top, skinny jeans, flannel shirt, leather jacket and biker boots. Fabulous.

Black skinny jeans

I believe that every person who has a phone and internet access has at least two of these in their closet. Versatile and timeless, in other words perfect for any outfit. You can match them with printed tees, tunic tops, leather jackets, motor boots, military inspired blazers – anything you want.

Untitled design (72)

They are incredibly cute and spice up your style. You will often see them combined with pantyhose and coats, knits and leather. Perfect basic garments indeed.

Denim jackets Untitled design (71)

The 80s are definitely back because, if you can’t buy one right now – just take your mom’s. They look literally the same: big bulky and thick. They look fabulous with skirts, dresses, leather leggings etc. Whatever you do, never ever wear them while you are wearing jeans – the 80’s are not THAT back.

Latest trends

Of course, there are many chicks and guys who are addicted to fashion. It is all about ripped jeans, Yeezy-style ripped tops, ankle boots, over the knee boots, statement jewelry, leather biker pants, bomber jackets, velvet crop tops, sequin pieces etc. Basically, if you want to find out about the latest trends and you hate reading different internet articles, just sit in a coffee shop in Brisbane for 2 hours and watch people passing by – you’ll find out everything you need to know.

Tomboyish gals

Untitled design (52) source/source

There’s one fabulous thing about tomboy look: everyone occasionally goes through that phase. Especially now when it is ultra-popular. In Brisbane you will see plenty of girls in sweatshirts, military blazers, oversized shirts, parkas, bombers etc. They are also big fans of rolled skinny jeans, baggy jeans, overalls and denim cut-offs. The key to looking great when you’re rocking the proper tomboy fashion is to always add a tiny feminine detail to make the whole outfit seem a touch more feminine. Something like heels, undone top buttons or jewelry will do the trick.

Preppy but with a twist

Girls Untitled design (70)

When it comes to girls, the signature garments are tailored skirt suits, low heels, wrap dresses, refined jewelry, pastel colors. However, you will definitely have a chance of seeing a girl in a rainbow colored tailored skirt suit with a giant hat on her head or a white playsuit and fiery red heels.

Untitled design (54) source/source/source

Just like everywhere, in Brisbane you will see a lot of people who like to have that Ivy league vibe with their sweaters over their plaid shirts, neat hairstyles, blazers and field jackets. Nautical-inspired accessories are also a must. However, even though they are being so neat and classy, they are also sometimes ready for some interesting twists. For example, you will see a guy with a neat V-neck sweater and polo shirt, and when you look little lower you will see pants with print for example.

As a conclusion, I must say that the streets of Brisbane are pretty much legit catwalks filled with brave and playful outfits. It is one of the best places for street style inspiration.

Art School Portfolio Examples & Wise Advice

While most prospective college students spend their time worrying about their admissions essays and interviews, students wishing to be admitted into a selective art program have a bit more to worry about. With most colleges requiring a professional portfolio, it’s hard to know where to start, what to include, and what format to make yours. These tips and examples can help you design an eye-catching, professional grade showcase of your work and talent.

What is an Artist Portfolio

A portfolio is essentially a resume for artists. Like a resume displays a person’s work history, a portfolio highlights an artist’s work and accomplishments. Colleges use portfolios to get an idea of a prospective student’s skills or specialties (such as figure drawing or digital design). Many colleges also require incoming students to submit a portfolio for scholarships and placement in courses.

What to Include in a Portfolio

This isn’t an easy question to answer as all schools are different. Some require students to only submit images of past work while others may require a portfolio to include drawing “tests.” These tests may be a subject or a figure that allows you to show creativity or a difficult skill.

Before you design your portfolio, print off the requirements of the colleges you plan on applying to. Don’t forget to apply to more than one just in case (even if that means more work for you). What you should look for in your requirements is form (digital or print), picture sizes, amount of images to include, type of image (hardcopy, sketch, etc.), and any of those tests we previously mentioned.

Whether you’re submitting your portfolio online or as hard copies, remember one big rule: formatting matters. You’ll want to assemble your pictures or selected work in a way that follows direction but that also shows a progression. Art school admissions officers love to see your work improve over time biographically or in a working order from concept to finished piece.

How to Write Artist Statements

While an admissions essay may not be required, an artist summary or statement may. Artist statements are typically a few paragraphs long and are meant to be an introduction to who you are and what your professional or future plans might be.

Include an introduction with your name, location, and high school/art school you have attended. In the second paragraph, talk about your skills, specialties, and interests. Finally, discuss what is in the portfolio. If you are asked to talk about one of the artist tests or required artwork, share about the process, why you made the artistic choices you did, and what techniques you incorporated.

Examples of Art School Portfolios

via Student Art Guide

This artist portfolio shows two different studies of the same topic. One one page, it highlights color, shading, highlighting, etc. The second page is a sketch, rather than a finished project. Sketchbooks like this are commonly required for painters or drawers.

Here is another way of laying out a portfolio in a way that shows off an artist’s abilities in two different areas — watercolor and portrait drawing. This format is both eye-catching and informative for the reviewer.

Fashion artists will often need a portfolio as well. With this area, you will need to “show your work.” This portfolio page includes concept, sketches, and then images of the real, finished product.

via Student Art Guide

If your area is in hard products such as sculpture or clay, clear and concise images are a must. Take pictures on a white and clean background so that the work pops. The highest quality pictures are one of the most important aspects of a portfolio no matter the medium.
