Is your DVR ready for a big binge? It’s time to talk summer shows! Normally, we’d be a bit bummed that spring finales have finished or that our favorite show is winding down, but honestly, this summer has some of the best TV so far this year! We’ve picked our top eight. Which ones do you plan on adding to your watchlist?

  1. Master of None, Netflix — May 12

We loved the first season of Netflix’s comedy Master of None, so we’re pumped season 2 is back and ready to go. Aziz Ansari stars as, well, himself — a struggling actor from New York. Last season saw some major upheaval in both his professional and love life, and season 2 picks up from where it leaves with Ansari’s character traveling Italy in his signature style.

  1. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Netflix — May 19

Netflix really rules the summer lineup with shows that we love to binge on. We make no exception for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It’s hilarious, lovable, and completely uplifting. Titus, Kimmy’s roommate, and musical star wannabe, is one of the best best-friend characters on TV. We can’t wait to see what season three does!

  1. The Bachelorette, ABC — May 22

If it’s the summer, it’s time for another season of romance, lust, and love. We’re hooked and we don’t care who knows it. It’s a guilty pleasure that seems to get better with time. And the drama always has us coming back for more.

  1. The Great British Baking Show, PBS — June 16

From the name, it sounds like a bore. But this show has hooked us! Half the time we have zero idea what they are baking, but it all looks so yummy and delicious. And unlike US cooking shows, there’s no yelling, no backstabbing, no major prize either! It’s just funny, educational, and relaxing show to veg out to.

  1. Hooten and the Lady, CW — July 13

We have mainly stuck to old shows returning, but there are a few promising shows we have our eyes on. One is CW’s attempt at a treasure-hunting romance series featuring an aristocrat and jerky adventurer. While it may seem cliche, we like the idea of traveling the world for love and artifacts.

  1. Game of Thrones, HBO — July 16

The mega-hit of cable TV is galloping towards its endgame. Game of Thrones has been building tension for years, and we’re promised some big payoffs in the first half of its last season, airing this summer. If you haven’t already seen it, you’ve got a few months to catch up to the dark, gory, mystifying show.

  1. The Story of Diana, ABC — August 9

You could say that we’re a bit obsessed with British royalty. That’s why we’ve marked the ABC miniseries documentary on our calendar. It explores the life and death of Princess Diana with new footage and interviews. While it won’t give us answers, it will allow us to soak up her grace, beauty, and tragedy a little while longer.

  1. The Tick, Amazon — August 25

If you love superhero shows, you’ll most likely have mixed feelings about Amazon’s The Tick. It’s not exactly action and saving the world. The main character is a regular old accountant with zero superpowers who decides to take down the real world villains that rule his town. But you will love the awkward dialogue and outrageous sequences. It’s part humor and part ode to the summer blockbusters we love.

Kiefer Sutherland stars as the man who stays back and watches in horror as his world collapses, and then he is put in charge of keeping the country together. What unfolds is the man who shouldn’t be president forced to lead.

Dorm Styling Tips Inspired by The Mindy Project

Dorm Decorating Mindy Kaling

We’re obsessed with funny girl Mindy Kaling’s über-popular TV show The Mindy Project. Not only is Mindy a hilarious character and the romance and antics she gets into has us constantly on our toes, but Mindy herself is like a style icon for our generation. Bright, bold, and loud, she knows just how to dress and decorate — so much so that we are crushing on Mindy-inspired fashion hard this year. These 5 dorm styling tips inspired by The Mindy Project is sure to elevate your residence hall look.

1.   The BOLDER the Better

If we could describe Dr. Lahiri as anything, it would be bold with a capital B. From her beautiful coats to her insanely decorated doctor’s office, she doesn’t mind showing the entire rainbow of color. This gives a boost to her personality and drives the whole modern chic feel of her show.

You can add color as tastefully and creatively as Mindy does by following a few rules. First, no color is off the table. You like it, it stays. Secondly, start with neutrals. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but take a look at her living room. The big pieces, like the couch, are always in creams or whites. Mindy then layers in colors and mixed matched patterns via throw pillows, rugs, dining items, and lamps. This is a huge takeaway for a drafty and dim dorm.

2.   Be Feminine Where It Counts

When taking a tour of Mindy’s apartment, what really strikes us is the huge contrast from her living and dining space to her bedroom area. It’s like a complete 180 from the in-your-face dramatic style to go to lots of pearly whites, softer lighting, and comfy pieces.

If you’re able to loft your bed, do it! This will allow you to create a space that feels separate from the funky living area. Then, consider DIY-ing a dramatic, white headboard. Add beige pillows and comforters with gold or bronze accents in more silky fabrics. String large bulb lights above or around your headboard or use softer, white light bulbs in white or gold table lamps. It’ll not only make your sleep space feel luxurious, but it will also capture the laid back Mindy look.

3.   Be Eclectic: Add in Touches of Vintage

Once your sleep space is taken care of, it’s time to head back to the living area. Remember color? Add more. We’re not joking. Go nuts! Pick orange, turquoise, reds, and browns. Do this in small pieces like coffee mugs, desk supplies, and standing picture frames.

There’s even a bigger bonus if you can go with vintage instead of ultra modern. For example, instead of going with a high-tech coffee pot, purchase an electric tea kettle in a charming color like teal. For your desk, use a spray painted, vintage frame to go around a white or cork board. It’s functional, yet pretty!

4.   Don’t Forget the Feisty Art

Mindy is unapologetically saucy. She also loves all things pop culture and prides herself in knowing all the latest and greatest celeb gossip. If you’re into it as much as she is, there’s one way you can make it a prominent feature in your dorm: make your art all about how lively and fierce you are.

Find inspirational posters with a bit of cheek or sarcasm. For example, our favorites at OCM are “Namast’ay in Bed” and “Snug Life” for the bedroom and quirky vintage movie posters and removable wallpaper in the living area. Your dorm room will absolutely love the perky, fashionable attire, and you’ll love coming home to a space that’s totally a mix of Mindy style and you.
